SolarWindow Technologies Inc (OTCMKTS:WNDW) has been a consistent volume leader on the OTC Markets. However, shares have been pretty much range bound since March as investors await news on commercialization. With the recent capital raise, could SolarWindow be one step closer?SolarWindow describes itself as "a developer of next generation, transparent electricity-generating SolarWindow coatings. SolarWindow coatings generate electricity on see-through glass and flexible plastics with colored tints popular to skyscraper glass. Unlike conventional systems, SolarWindow can be applied to all four sides of tall towers, generating electricity using natural and artificial light conditions and even shaded areas. SolarWindow uses organic materials, which are dissolved into liquid, ideal for low-cost high-output manufacturing; and is the subject of a patent pending technology."Last week, SolarWindows closed a $3,000,000 second tranche of its two tranche direct-to-investors capital raise efforts. The first tranche of the company’s financing efforts in the amount of $1,367,100 closed on March 31, 2016. A total of 28 persons, all of whom were accredited investors, participated in the capital raise; most were existing shareholders of the company at the time the individual subscribed for additional shares. This is certainly a sign of commitment when you consider the average investor put up $155k and all were existing shareholders. WNDW certainly has one of the most loyal shareholder bases among all OTC companies.

The company intends to utilize the proceeds from the Self-Directed Financing to build strategic partnerships with glass, energy, chemical, and building industries, achieve specific development objectives required to commercialize SolarWindow, and engage capital markets to attract both retail and institutional investors. CEO John Conklin said:

“SolarWindow is privileged to have all of our legacy and new shareholders stand by our side as we drive forward with the development of SolarWindow transparent electricity-generating coatings. It has always been a priority of ours to provide our shareholders the opportunity to invest in additional shares at the same price as our company’s major shareholders. This capital raise significantly strengthens our company’s commitment to achieving commercialization. The $4,367,100 capital dramatically enhances the company’s ability to achieve necessary milestones leading to the ultimate goal of commercializing SolarWindow.”

In April, SolarWindow announced that performance tests of its transparent electricity-generating coatings for glass and flexible plastics produced favorable outcomes for glass-to-glass lamination processes. The test results are especially promising for expanding the application of SolarWindow coatings beyond standard window glass to include high-performance laminated glass – a fast growing segment of the commercial and architectural glass market.

Scientists and engineers conducted testing to determine the compatibility of SolarWindow electricity-generating coatings with the demands of high-performance laminated glass processing by fabricating laminated SolarWindow modules. SolarWindow reported that laminated SolarWindow module performance tests demonstrated the following:

  • The proprietary interconnection system that carries electricity from the SolarWindow coated glass to external wiring was not damaged
  • SolarWindow color and clarity was maintained, which is important to customer adoption and sales
  • SolarWindow module edge seal remains intact, which is vital to high performance, durability, and product lifecycle

In March, SolarWindow entered into Phase III of its Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The primary development goal of the Agreement is the commercialization of SolarWindow products. Under the terms of the Agreement, SolarWindow and NREL will continue to work jointly to enhance product performance, increase scale, and improve reliability; and develop new features and obtain important performance certifications required for a commercial rollout.SolarWindow claims that it can provide a one-year financial payback while producing 50-times greater energy than rooftop solar when modeled for a 50-story building, according to the company’s independent validation. For the same building, SolarWindow shows 15-times the environmental benefit of rooftop solar by avoiding 2.2 million miles of equivalent carbon dioxide emissions produced by vehicles, according to the company’s independently validated Power & Financial Model.Currently trading with a market cap of $105 million, WNDW has been one of the most active and talked about names on the OTC Markets. It has attracted not only a loyal shareholder base, but also plenty of short sellers and skeptics. We're hoping that the recent capital raise will get the company over the hump and prove the skeptics wrong once and for all. We will be updating Insider Financial as soon as we know more.
