ParkerVision Inc (NASDAQ:PRKR) is ready to do battle with the likes of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM) and Samsung after getting $10 million in funding. Brickell Key Investments LP is providing the capital to pay ongoing legal fees and expenses incurred in connection with the previously announced complaint filed by the Company with the United States International Trade Commission (“ITC”) and the related United States district court action. The Company is represented in these actions by the law firm of Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. (“Mintz Levin”). CEO Jeffrey Parker said:

“We believe Brickell’s financial commitment demonstrates a recognition of the value, and the underlying rights, of our innovations. This funding agreement, along with our engagement arrangements with Mintz Levin and McKool Smith, ensures that ParkerVision has the financial backing to execute fully on its patent enforcement strategy. ParkerVision has invested heavily in the development and protection of important innovations that are being broadly used in the marketplace by others without regard to our ownership rights. We have also invested, and continue to invest, in the development of products, the successful commercialization of which relies, in part, on our ability to successfully protect our underlying proprietary technologies. We remain confident that the enforcement actions supported by this funding will result in a return on the significant investments made by the Company and its shareholders and allow the Company to maintain its focus on the development of innovative products and technologies.”

These actions pertain to the company's proprietary RF technologies. ParkerVision designs, develops and markets its proprietary RF technologies, which enable advanced wireless communications for current and next generation mobile communications networks. Its solutions for wireless transfer of radio frequency (RF) waveforms enable significant advancements in wireless products, addressing the needs of the cellular industry for efficient use of power, reduced cost and size, greater design simplicity and enhanced performance in mobile handsets as the industry migrates to next generation networks. In January, the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) instituted an investigation of the unfair trade practices committed by Apple Inc., LG (LG Electronics, Inc., LG Electronics U.S.A., Inc., and LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc.), Samsung (Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., Samsung Telecommunications America, LLC, and Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.), and Qualcomm Incorporated. The unfair trade practices under investigation relate to the importation, sale for importation, and/or the sale after importation of products such the Apple iPhone 6, the Apple iPad Air 2, the Samsung Galaxy S6, and the LG G3, among others. Many of these devices incorporate technology provided by Qualcomm and others that infringe ParkerVision’s patents directed towards radio-frequency technology. The investigation is a result of the complaint filed by ParkerVision in December 2015.In December, ParkerVision had requested that the ITC institute an investigation and that it bar them from continuing to import and sell their infringing products in the United States. ParkerVision has also filed complaints against each of the proposed respondents in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida. The accused products include the Apple iPhone 6, the Apple iPad Air 2, the Samsung Galaxy S6, and the LG G3, among others. Many of the accused products include infringing technology manufactured by Qualcomm and incorporated by Apple, Samsung, and LG.We look at ParkerVision as a high risk/reward opportunity that got a lot less risky with the $10 million from Brickell Key. With a market cap of just $25 million, ParkerVision could be a home run depending on how the litigation plays out. Apple, Qualcomm, LG and Samsung all have deep pockets. A settlement north of $100 million would be a drop in the bucket for either company. If all goes according to plan, PRKR could be a multi-bagger for patient investors.
